Less water and chemicals with electrodialysis deashing step

Lenntech and PDC are partnering up with the electrodialysis deashing step. Lenntech has made good progress with membrane filtration research. The pilot trials using electrodialysis to deash C5/C6 and C6 sugar solutions yielded highly positive results. The tests demonstrated that electrodialysis could provide a sustainable solution to deashing sugar solutions, both in terms of environmental impact and financial feasibility.

Lenntech and PDC are presently working on creating multiple scenarios to assess the benefits and potential consequences of integrating an electrodialysis deashing process into the planned commercial plant. Initial findings indicate that a combination of electrodialysis and ion exchange resins could provide the optimal solution for deashing Dawn sugar solutions.

Utilizing electrodialysis to deash sugar solutions can significantly decrease the usage of chemicals and water, thereby enhancing the overall sustainability and appeal of the process. Additionally, electrodialysis is a process that runs solely on electricity, contributing towards the electrification of the entire concept.

Life Cycle Assessment demonstrates significantly lower carbon footprint of Avantium’s plantMPG™

Avantium partnered with Sphera to perform a cradle-to-grave LCA for Avantium’s plantMPG™, produced with its Ray Technology™ from sucrose derived from the sugar beet of Cosun Beet Company. The LCA clearly demonstrates the potential of Avantium's plantMPG™ to help reducing global warming.

Climate change impact of Ray plantMPG™ is lowered with 50-81% compared to fossil- and biobased MPG. The ISO-certified LCA for plantMPG™ shows a significant improvement of up to 81% in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions over the full life cycle when Avantium’s plantMPG™ is compared with its fossil-based and biobased incumbents.
