What is the way towards a fossil-free future? There is not one right answer. In fact, there are many roads leading to the same direction and many projects with similar aims to enhance that path. The IMPRESS way is to combine European know-how to create a novel biorefining concept with selected key technologies. It aims to assess multiple purification and separation technologies that are used to develop plant-based products with an improved carbon footprint.

IMPRESS is our way, so how do we get there? The answer is, together. During the project, partners will co-operate and focus on enhancing further the effective integration between different processing steps and purifying the process intermediates and/or products. All partners bring their own expertise and focus areas:

• Avantium brings its Dawn and Ray Technologies in addition to utilizing its expertise in catalysis to the project. Avantium’s Dawn Technology™ converts non-food plant-based feedstock into industrial sugars and lignin. The Ray Technology™ converts these industrial sugars into plant-based MEG and MPG.

• Sulzer is a global leader in fluid engineering and brings its expertise for example in crystallisation to the project.

• KNAUER uses its expertise to contribute in continuous separation technologies, such as Simulated Moving Bed (SMB) chromatography.

• CNRS develops new nanoporous materials for the challenging separation of light by-products.

• Lenntech is responsible for enhancing the effectiveness of the process by removal of water from the sugar streams.

• Aalto aims to develop separation processes for sugar alcohols and sugars by means of crystallisation, and conversion processes for woody biomass.

• Vogelbusch will adapt and scale up two dedicated processes for the production of fodder yeast and the production of xylitol from hemicellulose hydrolysates by fermentation.

• PDC leads the conceptual process design, technology integration and techno-economic assessment, using structured methods and expert systems (PROSYN®).

• Sphera is a global leader in sustainability and LCA software, delivering relevant insights into environmental performance within IMPRESS.

• Finally, yet importantly, Xamk will disseminate the concept to future experts and employees through a lifelong learning e-platform.

Together, these steps enable the production of sustainable plant-based products and support the transition of the chemicals and materials industries to non-fossil resources.
